Sketchnoting is cool, on paper.

There is a lot of research coming out that supports

the use of sketching to commit learning to memory. This can

be a frustrating skill to learn, as we tend to be overly critical

of our art skills, but with some practice, you can turn your

study notes into something useful, and appealing.

Interested? Check out this article on Edutopia.

Want some guided practice? The Verbal to Visual youtube

channel has many quick videos.

Just please keep your sketching on your own personal

property.

“Oranges are food.”

According to Ms Martens, vice-principal, “Oranges are food.”

In a recent visit to the Library Learning Commons, Ms. Martens took a few moments to ask students to consider if what they were eating in the library was in fact food.

Since before this writer started to work at Isfeld, the library has been a place where food is not permitted. Why? Food, including oranges, is sticky, and not only compromises keyboards, but is often left behind at tables, or stashed under seating (to be discovered by staff at a later, moldier date). Also, and worth mentioning, is that while you can entice friends with sugary treats, gross bug-dwelling bugs are sure to come along for the ride.

Please do not eat in the library. Eat before. Or take a lap and return.

What is climate guilt, anyway?

Let’s define it, and question it

Climate guilt comes from our feelings about our inability or unwillingness to effectively protect the environment. The Columbia Climate School, an inter-disciplinary department at Columbia University, suggests that climate guilt is a marketing tool. Read this article, and see what you think.

Who can we talk to?

Serina Allison is our district lead Outdoor Learning teacher, suggests that we look to solutions based journalism to counter feelings of hopelessness around climate change. Focus on the good things that are happening and get involved with a project! Try the CBC podcast What on Earth to get started.

Are there any books that aren’t scorced Earth apocalypses?

Yes! Check out this book list from the LA Times (choose titles that are right for you, of course!) or this list from Ted Ed. Many public libraries also have theme lists. I’ll put it on my to-do list at Isfeld. Have a suggestion? Come in the let me know!

Coming soon...

This year, the Isfeld Library Learning Commons is hosting the Forest of Reading challenge. In English, we have purchased 5 copies of each of the White Pine titles. This selection is intended for grade 9-12 students. In French, we have the Tamarac titles, novels with between 100-200 pages. In the coming days, we will post student-created book reviews to help you choose which one to read first! The Forest of Reading is like Canada Reads: as long as you read at least 5 of the books, you can vote for your favourite to win! Launching in December!

Read alone or read with friends! Step out of your genre comfort zone and try some of these interesting, thought-provoking and funny Canadian books.
